Kemper Sports Management and the City of Carlsbad made the decision not to overseed fairways and roughs for fall 2007-2008.

Harold Vaubel, owner/agronomist of HGM Consulting, contacted Chris Latham, golf course superintendent, in August 2007, and presented an alternative method of not requiring overseeding.  That program was approved by City of Carlsbad and Kemper Sports Management and started in October 2007.  The following months of October, November, December and January, the golf course followed the program designed by HGM Consulting, and monitored by Chris Latham.

Since they saw such good response and results, the City elected not to overseed for this coming fall and winter season.  Only the tee complexes will be overseeded with ryegrass.

Following is the program that was designed by HGM Consulting with the approval of Chris Latham, for the winter and spring of 2008-2009:

            With 13 applications per the scheduled sheet included, the Turf Nutrient Fertilizer Program ranges per application from 1/3 lb. to ½ lb. of the nutrients included.

All HGM products are programmed to be applied every two weeks during the months of November, December and January.  This will ensure the quality and effectiveness of HGM products to maintain green color and growth on the hybrid 419 bermudagrass.

This updated program for 2008-2009 can be used on overseeded hybrid 328 bermudagrass tee complexes. 

The HGM products will enable the bermudagrass stolens and rhizomes to have continuous growth and assistance along with the ryegrass seed to help fill in the divots created on the complexes.

Mother Nature dictates during the winter months with rainfall and frost.  HGM products do not require rainfall to maintain a green growing matrix.  You can’t fool Mother Nature, but you can condition the soil first and then feed the plant at a lesser rate of fertilizer to maintain green color and for cost savings.
